I found this lichen rock (formally known as rhizocarpon or map lichen) while camping here in Utah over the summer. It's one of my favorite things to find and collect around here! Lichen are produced through a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae so it is a living organism :)
I cut and shaped this stone and then wrapped it in a fine silver bezel. I set it in a shadow-box style, meaning a domed trim (piece of metal) over the top of the stone and heavily oxidized the inside of the setting to make the colors of this stone pop a little more. It hangs from a hidden bail on a faux-suede black cord.
The cord measures about 3 feet so you can choose your desired length. I personally love to wear this style higher up on my neck like a choker.
Approximate measurements: .5 inches (1.6cm)
Because lichen is a living organism please take your necklace off when showering, swimming, working out, etc. as harsh chemicals will kill the lichen off of the rock! And then you'd just have a not-as-cool rock necklace :)
